Recharge of aquifers with reclaimed wastewater a case for Saudi Arabia

Abstract

In recent years there has been an alarming depletion of groundwater resources in the aquifers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to increasing agricultural and urban water requirements Efforts are being made to increase the use of reclaimed waste water The sixth development plan envisages the use of 310 million cubic meters of reclaimed treated wastewater in the year 19981999 Wastewater recharge is one of the most promising techniques available for reclaiming treated wastewater Expected water quality improvements and economic considerations strongly favor the undertaking of large scale recharge projects to replenish the depleting water tables in the Kingdom Alluvial aquifers and the outcrops of aquifers would be suitable sites for recharge The recharged water can be withdrawn to be used for irrigation and possibly for potable use Such use would be lawful from the Islamic viewpoint

لوحظ خلال السنوات القليلة الماضية أن هناك استنزافا لمخزون الموارد المائية في المملكة العربية السعودية نتيجة لزيادة الطلب لأغراض الزراعة، والاستهلاك المنزلي وقد بذلت الجهود لزيادة الاستفادة من المياه العادمة المعالجة وتتوقع الخطة السادسة للتنمية الاستفادة من (310) مليون متر مكعب من مياه الصرف الصحي المعالج للعام 19981999 م وتعتبر تغذية المياه الجوفية من أفضل الطرق للاستفادة من مياه الصرف الصحي المعالجة وحيث أن التحسن المتوقع لنوعية الماء والعوامل الاقتصادية تؤيد القيام بمشروع حقلي تجريبي لتغذية المياه الجوفية المتناقصة في المملكة تعتبر المكامن الرسوبية المنقولة ومنكشفات المكامن المائية أماكن ملائمة للتغذية ومن الممكن استخدام المياه المغذاة لأغراض الزراعة، واحتمال استعمالها للشرب وهذا الاستخدام لا يتعارض مع ما تسمح به الشريعة الإسلامية
