Abstract:
Signal processing aimed at increasing the resolution is of particular importance
in acoustic imaging because of the small numerical apertures and the time and cost
considerations which limit the physical area over which data is collected Although
a number of techniques have been reported in the literature for resolving beyond
the diffraction limit of a given aperture in the fields of optics microwaves and
acoustics they suffer from sensitivity to noise the requirement for a priori
information restrictions on the imaging geometry or the need for long
computation times In a previous publication the authors have described a new
method for resolution improvement by aperture expansion which is based on the
prinicple of analytic continuation The proposed technique has the advantages of
simplicity versatility and robustness against noise With this technique the
hologram function is modeled using the set of data collected over the restricted
aperture and the model is then used to predict new points outside this aperture
Following a brief review of the development of predictive and corrective models
this paper considers the effects of noise and prediction errors in detail and
describes methods to increase stability with noise Simulation results for imaging
singlepoint multipoint and quasicontinuous objects in the presence of noise are
presented Results obtained when the new technique was applied to experimentally
measured line holograms are also discussed and the application of the technique
to twodimensional holograms is considered
