Remote sensing techniques for monitoring of pollution in coastal waters potential application to Saudi Arabia

Abstract

بالنظر إلى التقدم المدني والصناعي ووجود مرافق تصدير البترول على سواحل المملكة العربية السعودية فقد أصبحت هذه السواحل عرضة للتلوث من المخلفات المنزلية وتسرب النفط والدراسات الحديثة لسواحل المنطقة الشرقية أثبتت هذه النظرية بما أن الطرق المألوفة تستهلك وقتا طويلا وأموالا كثيرة، فإن طرق التحسس عن بعد أصبحت جذابة كبديل للطرق القديمة في مراقبة المشاكل وتقدير التلوث هذه الورقة تحدد طرق تحسس عن بعد المستعملة حاليا لمراقبة وتجديد التلوث البحري وخاصة في المناطق القاحلة مثل الموجودة بالمملكة العربية السعودية

In view of the massive urbanization industrialization and oil exporting taking place along the coastline of Saudi Arabia her coastal waters are vulnerable to pollution from domestic wastes industrial wastes and oil spills respectively Recent studies in parts of the eastern coast have in fact confirmed this hypothesis Since conventional methods are likely to be timeconsuming and expensive remote sensing techniques for the monitoring and assessment of the problem are an attractive alternative This paper outlines remote sensing techniques available today for the monitoring and assessment of marine pollution problems and particularly suited to conditions prevalent in arid zones such as Saudi Arabia
