شهدت العقود الثلاثة السابقة دراسات عديدة في مجال تعرف الآلة على الأحرف آليا، وكان النصيب الأكبر في هذه الدراسات للأحرف اللاتينية، إلا أن هناك بعض الدراسات والبحوث التي عنيت بالأحرف العربية، وتعتبر هذه الدراسة إحداها، وتهدف إلى تحديد المشاكل الرئيسية في التعرف على الأحرف العربية المكتوبة باليد والمطبوعة ؛ الطريقة الأولى تعتمد على الأسلوب البنائي المباشر للتعرف على الحرف المكتوب باستخدام لوحة الكتابة الإلكترونية، أما الطريقة الثانية فتعتمد على الأسلوب الإحصائي غير المباشر للتعرف على الحرف المطبوع المدخل للآلة بواسطة الماسحة الضوئية Machine simulation of human reading has been a subject of intensive research for almost three decades While most of this research has been concerned with character recognition some work has been conducted towards the automatic recognition of Arabic characters The objectives of the paper are to identify the major problems related to handwritten and printed Arabic character recognition ; to examine different preprocessing techniques used with online and offline strategies Furthermore the study proposes two methods for the recognition of handwritten and printed Arabic characters The first is one involving an online structural approach for the recognition of handwritten characters entered from a graphic tablet The second is an offline statistical approach for the recognition of printed characters entered from a scanner
