Polysulfone film darkens when exposed to UV radiation below 320 nm and the
extent of the darkening is related quantitatively to UVB dose This method has
been used to monitor the solar UVB environment in Dhahran Saudi Arabia as
representative of the Arabian Gulf region Data collected from 15 July 1981 to 15
July 1982 are presented and compared with published data for England representative
of a temperate site and Queensland Australia representative of a tropical
site Monthly averages show the variation in UVB dose through the year Comparisons
of the dose at the three sites show the combined effects of differences in latitude
and in general seasonal climatic conditions Through out the year the dose at
Dhahran is higher than expected on the basis of latitude differences alone and this is
attributed to the usually cloudless climatic conditions Daytoday changes in UVB
dose in Dhahran show specific variations with extreme meteorological conditions
But it is suggested that these tluctuations in the UVB dose more generally renect
daytoday variations in the ozone layer above Dhahran The UVB dose measured
on an hourly basis shows the effect of variation in the sun's elevation
