A short review regarding problem of durability of concretes with thermally
incompatible components is presented Unequal temperature volume changes of
concrete components cause stresses in them and cracks due to these stresses can
reduce durability of such concrete This thermal incompatibility of concrete
components (TICC) in many cases is not of importance since concrete is not
exposed to large temperature changes or differences of temperature volume changes
of components are not large enough When TICC is large enough to damage
concrete it is usually hidden since it is in most cases combined with some other
damaging effect for example salt action (in the Middle East countries) or with frost
action (in northern countries) and both salt and frost are easily visible while
nobody measures coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of rocks used as aggregate
for concrete
While analytical studies clearly show large average tensile stresses in components
of concrete due to the TICC and even greater stress concentrations experimental
studies show contradictory results This is because most experiments are carried out
on specimens of young concrete with other phenomena interfering in tests and
distorting the results to such an extent that TICC is hardly noticeable
Reduced durability of concretes under certain climatic conditions and in types of
structures exposed to temperature changes call for detailed studies of TICC and
complete understanding of the phenomenon
